Diabetic Health Insurance

June 24th, 2011 0 Comments

Nobody really enjoys talking about health insurance, but it’s a necessary evil, especially for those of us who live with some sort of chronic medical condition. Certainly, diabetic patients fall under this category, and for many who receive the diabetes diagnosis, questions about insurance are among the first that spring to mind. And it’s not difficult to understand why that is; diabetic care can be costly, and it can also be a bit complex. The desire to know exactly what is and is not covered by insurance is completely natural.

The first question you might have is about what kind of insurance you need to get. The answer to this might be a bit tricky, however. In terms of what will provide you with the most coverage-and the lowest premiums-general medical insurance is almost always the best option. However, many general medical plans will not begin to pay for diabetic care for a good long while. This might leave you in the lurch for a while, but it is almost certainly the best option nevertheless.

But if that makes diabetic insurance sound like a frustrating and unhelpful endeavor, know that there are actually a lot of great perks, and things are getting better all the time for those who suffer from diabetes. For instance, recent legislation has ensured that most insurance plans now cover diabetic education-something that’s a real benefit for those who have just recently received the diagnosis. Medicare, for instance, covers up to ten hours of diabetic education; medical nutrition therapy is also covered under most plans.

And of course, there are plenty of others diabetic services and supplies that are covered by insurance, and by Medicare in particular. Diabetic pumps and insulin are among the most vital supplies a diabetic will need, and they are, happily, covered by most insurance plans. Just be aware that a prescription from your physician will be necessary for these items. Know also that, in some cases, a diabetic education class will be necessary before insurance will cover the insulin pump.

This might all sound very daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of educational opportunities out there, including many non-profit organizations devoted to the care of diabetic patients, that can help you navigate these rather complex issues. A diagnosis of diabetes may be a slight complication in your pursuit of quality health insurance, but it is by no means an insurmountable obstacle, and in fact there are many real benefits offered by most insurance companies to those with diabetes.
